By connecting to the real world of students’ lives, authentic learning enables students to become lifelong learners who contribute to society and the wider world as active and discerning citizens. Authentic learning is central to our work as Catholic educators because it promotes the continual growth and wellbeing of the whole person — spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically.
At St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School Clovelly, our student-centred learning approach is based on latest teaching expectations from the NSW teaching syllabus.
The learning environment is respectful and productive. Positive relationships are developed between the teacher and students and between students. Effort is valued and recognised to support and encourage student success.
The learning environment promotes self-motivation, persistence, independence and interdependence. Teachers emphasise the quality of learning through high expectations. Students set goals and take responsibility for their learning and are supported by skilled teacher instructional conversations.
Student needs, interests and diversity are reflected in the learning experiences and program content. A wide range of teaching strategies and learning experiences are used to differentiate learning and promote different ways of learning and thinking. Teaching strategies and learning experiences offer flexibility to respond to student needs.
Students are challenged and experience opportunities to develop deep understanding, reflect on values and attitudes and build and apply skills. Interactive learning approaches are used to encourage critical thinking, creativity, reflection and problem-solving. Learning is sustained and progressive over time. Learning experiences are reflective of students’ real-life context to build connections. Academic language development across the curriculum is values.
Assessment is integral to teaching and learning. Teachers analyse student learning in a rigorous way to make effective teaching decisions.
COVID‑19 response to Remote Learning
Our Continuity Learning Plan is designed to to help ensure that processes within our school system can continue during these challenging times. While we are engaged with remote learning, the school has a clear plan to ensure that all aspects of teaching and learning are addressed in this new mode of presentation.
